2. Saving the environment - for every kilowatt-hour you produce, you are NOT requiring a power plant to make that much energy for you. That results in lower carbon emissions and less damage to the environment.

3. Energy independence - as fossil fuel prices continue to rise, being independent of your utility's power supply becomes increasingly attractive. We know oil and coal are finite resources and one day they will be gone. Without an independent power source, there is no assurance electricity will be available to run your home, computer, etc.

Here are the steps you need to take to see if wind power is for you:

1. Don't give up until you thoroughly understand the wind environment around your home - the smartest way to the ball in motion is to learn all you can about the wind energy on your property. This requires delving into wind patterns at different altitudes and at different distances from your house. The factors you must consider are, the distance from your house (line loss), how high the turbine must be placed to have access to sustained wind, and the seasonality of the wind patterns.

2. Look into various turbines that can deliver power in your particular wind environment - not all windmills are the same. Make sure that the wind turbine you choose fits the wind patterns on your property. You can't just examine the manufacturer's specifications and expect the device to perform in the same way at your home. There are many stories out there about underperforming wind turbines that don't meet claims made by their manufacturers.

In any case, the time to begin your study is now. Start with really trying to understand the free energy on your property. If a DIY wind turbine is right for you, it won't take long before you have paid your investment.
