How To Cheaply Build Affordable Residential Wind Turbine

Now is the time to build a residential wind turbine.

2. Satisfaction of doing this yourself - it is not all that difficult to do and if you have some mechanical aptitude and do projects around your house, making your residential wind turbine from scratch will be a cinch and very rewarding.

3. Help make the world Greener - you are displacing the production of carbon, which is a byproduct of fossil fuel power production by making your own wind turbine.

How long will it take me to start making power with my wind turbine?

If you have all the parts and are working with this consistently, it won't longer than a few weeks to have it ready to install.

What are the steps I need to take to get the turbine up and running?

Assuming you have taken the first 2 steps mentioned earlier, you now have the green light to move forward:

1. Find a set of plans that matches your objectives - carefully conducting this research will pay off in spades. You must get this part right for the rest to be straightforward.

There is a high failure rate with residential wind turbines because they often don't specify heavy duty enough construction materials. Make sure the plans you buy specify stronger material, like, for example spruce wood for the blades.


2. Have an open and well-ventilated place to work in - you will be spending a lot of time putting things together there so you will want an area where you can spread everything out.

3. Find a good local hardware store - make sure you can buy all the materials you need locally.

The 5 major components of a residential wind turbine are:

1. Rotor system 2. Motor 3. Batteries and inverter 4. Tower or roof mount 5. Tail assembly

* The rotors or blades are of course what produce the mechanical power to make the electricity. The 2 ways you can use the power you create are; charge a battery and supply direct power to your home.

* The blades and their geometry are therefore, are very critical to a successful wind project.

* You will have to buy the motor, the alternator, and all battery charging apparatus over the internet or from a local electrical supply house. This will be spelled out clearly in the plans you buy.

* Where exactly you mount the wind turbine must also be given careful consideration. It needs to be located at least 30 feet above the tree line in order to grab the most wind. The reason for this is if it is mounted any lower, buildings and trees will interfere with the consistency of the wind.

* You can often get old tv towers for very little or even free that work great for residential wind turbines.

* The final part of the assembly is the tail system and it is quite important as well. The tail is responsible for steering the wind turbine into the prevailing wind.
